Centrepiece...
The city of Birmingham is home to one of the most famous centres for the production and sale of Jewellery in the world, the Jewellery Quarter, a square mile packed with shops, workshops and various jewellery-related businesses within walking distance from Birmingham city centre.
There are over 40 jewellery and silversmithing designer makers working from studios and workshops within the Jewellery Quarter, but only very few of the large number of retail outlets, promote locally made contemporary designed, handcrafted jewellery and silverware.
It is for this reason that a group of Jewellery Quarter based designer makers began, what has become known as 'Centrepiece'.
Centrepiece is a group of jewellers and silversmiths who design and make their individual work from workshops and studios situated within Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. Each designer is self-employed and runs their own business producing and selling jewellery, silver collections and individual commissions across the UK and around the world.
The group was established in 1997, with a mission to enhance the public perception of work produced in Jewellery Quarter by organising an exhibition, selling direct to the public, at a prestigious Birmingham venue. Thus started an annual month-long show at Symphony Hall, which coincides with the Brilliantly Birmingham event during the run up to Christmas.
Centrepiece has steadily increased its reputation during the past few years, with additional exhibitions at The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Print'Or in Lyon, France, and the New Art Gallery Walsall.
In its endevour not to stay static, the group invites guest exhibitors to show with them at their Christmas exhibitions at Symphony Hall. Centrepiece retains a core of exhibitors, but the group is always keen to accommodate up and coming new designers, giving the show a fresh perspective every year.
Participation in Centrepiece is through a selection process.
