Jo Candlish’s work is influenced by the techniques of foldforming and anti-clastic raising. Jo’s designs appear simple, comprising of two or three elements within each piece focusing on a graceful line or silhouette for strength in design. This simplicity is derived from the natural forms of seed pods, leaves, flowers and stars as a source of inspiration.

After completing a fine art degree, Jo became a member of JASSO and discovered a passion and aptitude for constructing strong three dimensional forms. She has completed a year with Design Space, an exciting business development programme based in Birmingham. Jo now spends her time at her new workshop at Quarter Studio’s in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham where she continues her jewellery and silversmithing practice.

Centrepiece Christmas Ornaments

This year the Centrepiece Designers have decided to celebrate the festive season by making a range of Christmas Ornaments for their annual selling exhibition at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.

The variety the designers submitted was breath taking, each worked in keeping with their individual style to to make something truly unique to them. From delicate Christmas castles to neat bunches of mistletoe the full collection of pieces will be for sale during the 2011 Exhibition.

I finished a Master degree in Jewellery, Silversmithing and Related Products last September and then developed my textile as a self-employed designer maker at Design Space. I obtained the Gold Prize & Council Special Award of 2011 Goldsmiths’ Craftsmanship & Design Awards. I enjoy the different materials and culture in my life.

The collection is inspired by Origami, it features the Japanese art of folding paper into attractive colour. All pieces are made from silver with hand-painted/printed fabrics and mixed media. The fabric elements can be removed or changed with different patterned fabrics. Also, the pieces can be worn without the fabric parts.

Priya Raju

For her Blue Lotus collection, Priya draws on her Indian heritage, creating three-dimensional pieces that echo lines seen in Mughal architecture. Each piece, crafted in sterling silver and set with diamonds, takes on a form of the lotus flower. Her creations fuse together traditional hand skills and today’s modern technology.

Priya initially undertook the evening class at the MAC for two years, then in 2008 enrolled at the School of Jewellery to study Design Crafts. Priya currently is a participant on the Design Space programme. Her Blue Lotus collection was shortlisted for the Treasure Competition 2011 run by Professional Jeweller.

Lynsey Pluck

Lynsey creates ethically responsible fine jewellery. Her unique designs combine 18ct ethical gold and diamonds with colourful recycled sari material detail, creating energetic yet elegant eye catching pieces.

Lynsey Pluck graduated from Sir John Cass Dept of art, media and design, London Metropolitan University. During her course Lynsey attained a number of awards including the Goldsmiths’ Company Foundation Degree Award Winner 2010. Lynsey is currently based in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, where she is developing her collection with the support of the Design Space programme.

Li-Chu-Wu

Li-Chu’s work is all about paper and layers; using multiple layers to create subtle movement and tactile qualities. Applying a mix of metalsmithing techniques and new technologies, she manipulates layered paper allowing it to expand in a concentric format, creating intricate, elaborate and unique body adornments.

Li-Chu Wu is a Taiwanese Jewellery designer who based in Birmingham, UK. Li-Chu completed a Masters in Jewellery, Silversmithing and Related Products at Birmingham City University in 2010. She has been selected as the profile designer for Brilliant Birmingham 2011. She is now working as an independent jewellery designer maker in Design Space.

Laura Golbourne

I am interested in the concept of escapism. My products are inspired by my interest in science fiction and fantasy stories. By combining these interests I create quirky, sterling silver, products which are intended to create a sense of fun in everyday tasks.

After graduating from the School of Jewellery in Birmingham in June 2010 I have been selected for many prestigious exhibitions and events such as One Year On at New Designers, the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths ‘Getting Started’ business course and Treasure as part of London Jewellery Week.

Kayleigh Biggs

My work is cotemporary yet has an evident historical influence, it has been informed by studying a range of materials and processes. I use traditional metalwork techniques alongside computer methods. The collections that I am currently working on have been developed from using a Micro-laser welder.

I studied Applied Arts at Coventry University, this has allowed me to bring together mixed media in my work, and has heavily influenced my designs. In 2010 I received The Goldsmiths’ Company Precious metal Bursary Award and in 2011 I was accepted to be on The Goldsmiths’ Company Website.

Kate Gilliland

Kate Gilliland Jewellery captures the imagination with a sense of adventure and intrigue. Each beautifully crafted piece of jewellery has its own story, it illuminates curiosity, conjuring fantastical tales. Using silver and pearls adds preciousness to the perfectly preserved small dead animals she finds. They are a reliquary, a celebration of life as much as they are of death. Kate attempts to stir the incongruous to life.

Kate studied BA (Hons) Design Crafts at De Montfort University in Leicester, where she specialised in Jewellery and Silversmithing. When she completed her degree she moved back home to Birmingham, after being accepted onto Design space, in the historic Jewellery Quarter. Kate continues to work in her workshop in the Quarter creating her curiosities.

Hannah Bates

Hannah uses the three dimensional nature of jewellery alongside colour and kinetic elements to draw the wearer into further exploration of the piece.

Inspired by engineering and the properties of the materials, Hannah uses Silver, Acrylics, Titanium and gemstones to construct tactile, wearable jewellery.

Hannah Graduated from Loughborough University’s School of Art and Design in 2006 with a First Class BA in 3D Design, Silversmithing and Jewellery. She then completed the Prince’s Trust Enterprise Programme and started Hannah Jewellery Designs before joining Design Space in 2010.
